Dungeon Tier Structure & Boss Depths

The labyrinth beneath the Tristram Cathedral descends through 16 levels across 4 distinct dungeon environments:

•`The Church (Levels 1 - 4)`: Skeletons, Scavengers, and Fallen Ones. Features The Butcher on Level 2 and the Skeleton King on Level 3.

•`The Catacombs (Levels 5 - 8)`: Horned Demons, Goatmen, and Gargoyles. Lighting dims and ranged attackers become prevalent.

•`The Caves (Levels 9 - 12)`: Lava pits, Acid Beasts, and Lightning Demons. Resistance to fire and lightning is essential.

•`Hell (Levels 13 - 16)`: Blood Knights, Succubi, and Archbishop Lazarus on Level 15. Diablo awaits in the inner sanctum of Level 16.

The Butcher Strategy (Iron Gate Cheese)

The Butcher on Level 2 is famous for overwhelming early players with rapid cleaver strikes:

•Lure The Butcher toward a room with a barred iron gate.

•Slip through the doorway and close the gate behind you. The Butcher's AI cannot open iron doors.

•Equip a bow (or fire spell) and safely shoot him through the metal grating until defeated, claiming The Butcher's Cleaver.

How do I unlock the full 16 levels beyond the shareware demo?

The browser port starts with the shareware demo (Levels 1-2). If you own Diablo 1, drag and drop your original DIABDAT.MPQ file directly into the game canvas window. DevilutionX mounts it instantly in WebAssembly, unlocking all 16 dungeon floors, Hell difficulty, and all character classes.

How do I beat The Butcher on Level 2 without dying?

Lure him to a room with an iron barred gate, step through, and shut the door. The Butcher cannot open iron doors. You can then shoot him through the metal bars with a bow or fire spells until he falls.

Where are my character saves stored?

All character data, gold, and gear are stored locally in your browser's IndexedDB. You can also export your .sv character files directly to backup your hero.

What is the best class for a first playthrough?

The Warrior is recommended for beginners due to high starting health, 250 Strength cap, and the ability to repair his own weapons in the dungeon without paying Griswold.
